Tragedy spurs two to take driving courses
From Derby Telegraph - Thursday 26th November 2009
TWO young people in Ashbourne have signed up to take advanced driving sessions following a road crash near the town which claimed three lives.
Seven people living in or near the town were locked up following a prosecution over the crash on the A52, near Kirk Langley, in October last year.
Since the accident, police have been trying to tackle the problem of nuisance motorists.
Measures have included fines, confiscation of cars, meetings between residents and drivers and education.
Earlier this month police invited young drivers to Shawcroft Car Park, in Ashbourne, where an information day was being held by the East Midlands branch of Rospa Advanced Drivers And Riders with the aim of improving driving standards.
Since the event, the organisation has welcomed two new young drivers.
Shay Connell, whose 16-year-old son Liam was killed in a crash on the A52, is backing the scheme.
He said: "I'm pleased the event has been held in Ashbourne and I am 100% behind efforts being made to get drivers thinking about road safety."
